VENEZIA È VIVA
What happens to a tourist magnet in Sleeping Beauty? Alice discovers the deserted Venice in historical stasis. A time capsule of the empty lagoon city.
2022
80mins
German-Italian subtitles, and French, English
Synopsis: Alice has come to Venice for a six-month period as an artist-in-residence when the pandemic brings everything to a standstill. People distrust her; as a foreigner, she could be carrying the virus. One day, she follows a sound, which leads her to the Benedetto Marcello Music Conservatory. Together with two female students, Alice explores Venice to discover a life the city has never seen before. Piazza San Marco turns into a venue for joggers and exercise. The surface of the Canal Grande is like a mirror. Fish return to the waters. No boats. Pervading the silence are the daily Coronavirus media bulletins sounding from inside the houses. Ambulances, the police and the military are a constant presence. No one is allowed to take a step without a mask. Venezia è viva documents a historic moment in time, from lockdown to the re-opening of the city.
